Drinking Wine and Heart Disease

Drinking Wine 'Could Protect Against Heart Disease'

Authors of a controversial scientific study in Spain have suggested that alcohol, when consumed in both small and large amounts, can reduce the risk of developing heart disease.

The study, recently published in the journal Heart, found that drinking between five and 30 grams of red wine per day reduced the risk of heart problems by half.

Although the rate of reduced risk did not increase the more a person drank, the study revealed that even those who took in the equivalent of a whole bottle of red wine still had a 50 per cent lower chance of developing heart disease.

Some experts have criticized the study saying that increased alcohol consumption, while it may not increase heart disease risks, still contributed to cancer, mental health issues, liver cirrhosis and general accidents.

Robert Sutton, a professor of surgery at the University of Liverpool in Britain, said the study had "several flaws" and did not mean that high levels of alcohol consumption would improve a person's health.
