Sleeping Patterns are Increasingly Better After You Retire

Scientist Find 'Key' To Good Night's Sleep

Scientists believe they have uncovered the key to a good night's sleep. The bad news is you'll have to wait until you retire to benefit from the discovery.

During the seven years after retirement people are 26 per cent less likely to suffer sleep disturbances, researchers at the University of Turk in Finland found after conducting a survey of more than 15,000 participants.

The evidence suggested that retired people were more likely to get a good night's sleep due to a stop in work-related stress. Although those that snore may not see the same benefits.

To further narrow down the cause, researchers monitored sleep patterns one year before and after retirement.

Those monitored before reported restlessness in 24.2 per cent of cases, while this number dropped to 17.8 per cent in the year following retirement.

The study was carried out between 1990 and 2006 on employees at a French gas and electricity firm.

Employees at the company enjoyed an 80 per cent retirement salary and a statutory retirement age of 55 to 60 years.

This is a further blow to working men around the US as the study also suggested that those facing less favorable retirement terms may continue to experience sleepless nights.
